MISSION ANNOUNCES DONATELLA VERSACE AS GUEST EDITOR FOR THE EXPRESSION ISSUE

By Madeline Howard.

The iconic designer takes the helm for issue 11 of Mission which is centered around the theme of self-expression, set to release in June.

We have the extraordinary privilege of welcoming Honoree Guest Editor Donatella Versace to the Expression Issue of Mission. As the first Honoree Guest Editor since Mission’s inception, the collaboration will highlight an important cause: LGBTQIA+ voices.

“I am absolutely honored to be the Guest Editor for the LGBTQIA+ edition of Mission,” Donatella says. “Through the magazine, I hope to give a platform to a global community, both young and well-established.”

The issue features individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community embracing self-expression. Donatella Versace will oversee content in the 11th issue, working closely with Founder and Editor-In-Chief Karina Givargisoff and her team toward a June 1st release. While the release of this edition is timed to Pride Month, Donatella’s multi-faceted support for the queer community is year-round, and is built into the very DNA of Versace as a brand.

I am absolutely honored to be the Guest Editor for the LGBTQIA+ edition of Mission.”

Donatella’s allyship started when she was just 11 years old, the age she was when her brother, Gianni, came out to her. At the time, having an openly gay brother in the south of Italy, where Donatella and Gianni were raised, was uncommon. Donatella loved him for who he was, but not all were accepting of his identity. As they grew older, the siblings collaborated on the Versace business until Gianni’s untimely passing in 1997. Donatella continues to lead the brand creatively to this day. In addition to creating a premiere global label, they were also pioneers in fundraising for the AIDS epidemic and other issues that centered on the LGBTQIA+ community.

Through the magazine, I hope to give a platform to a global community, both young and well-established.”

Today, Donatella is the co-chair of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Two years ago, she was also announced as the co-chair of the Rocket Fund, which is a $125 million-dollar fundraiser under the Elton John AIDS Foundation, who’s mission is to end AIDS by 2030. At the same time, she has also embraced grassroots organizations from LA to Milan, such as the LGBT Center in Los Angeles, and in Milan Check Point, one of the only sexual healthcare clinics for the queer community. Her philanthropic work also spans scholarship access to young designers, such as the CFDA Scholarship Fund which supports LGBTQIA+ students, to combatting repressive right-wing politicians and policies in Italy.

A living icon and fervent champion of LGBTQIA+ rights, we know that Donatella Versace will handle the Expression Issue with the care and attention it deserves.
