The Exhibition will feature over a dozen companies working to make denim Earth-friendly.
The fact that fashion is one of the most environmentally detrimental industries is nothing new, but there are plenty of innovators working to change that. The Mills Fabrica, a solutions platform accelerating techstyle and agrifood technology for social impact and sustainability, has announced an exhibition to celebrate sustainable technology in fashion–specifically in regard to denim.
Originally established in 2018, Hong Kong, Fabrica expanded to London in 2021 with a focus on investing in sustainable solutions and building a community of eco-conscious innovators and entrepreneurs. The King’s Cross location has a sustainable co-working space, an experiential store and gallery, and hosts industry events.
The Denim Futures Exhibition launched on October 3rd at The Mills Fabrica in London. The exhibition showcases ground-breaking innovations in denim, which are creating a greener future for the material. Currently, denim is the largest producer of pollution in fashion. Not only does denim production typically utilize fossil fuels, but the process requires thousands of liters of water to produce a single pair of jeans and uses harmful chemicals for dyes and finishing agents.
The Mills Fabrica will be hosting over a dozen sustainable brands and companies, such as AGI Denim, a leading denim manufacturer, Huue, a company transforming sugar into indigo dye, Circ, Earthshot Prize finalist and more. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the innovators and brands that are shaping a more planet-positive future for the denim industry,” says Amy Tsang, Acting Head of Europe at The Mills Fabrica. “Through spotlighting these transformative solutions, we hope it will educate and inspire others about the innovations that have the potential to create impactful change for generations to come.”
Denim Futures Exhibition comes at a time of urgency, as ramifications of climate change become more apparent by the day. Consumers have become increasingly eco-conscious and desire more transparency from brands, this is why The Mills Fabrica found it important to put on this exhibit. The Denim Futures will run for six months, where attendees are invited to explore the future of ecological denim, experiential retail, and immersive workshops.
“This exhibition is a showcase of existing, scalable solutions that can help reduce denim’s harmful impact on our planet.”
“This exhibition is a showcase of existing, scalable solutions that can help reduce denim’s harmful impact on our planet. From organic regenerative cotton farming, to more sustainable ways of dyeing, washing and finishing, to better consumer care, and finally recycling and repurposing to extend the life cycle of denim. By raising awareness of these innovations, we hope that it will encourage investment, drive more collaborations and spark meaningful conversations,” explains Tsang.
Denim is an incredibly universal material, yet so much of its history and impact is not common knowledge. The exhibition will bring together professionals, designers, brands, and environmental advocates to share the evolution of denim’s past and emphasize that a cleaner future for the textile is possible. “The Mills Fabrica’s mission is to inform, educate and inspire,” says Tsang. “We want to bring these innovations to the forefront and demonstrate that the future of the denim industry is what we make it.”
